Overview
enStratus is a Software-as-a-Service platform for cloud infrastructure management across multiple providers. enStratus is mainly targeted at deployment and the ongoing maintenance of transactional database applications in Amazon Web Services and ReliaCloud. The three main components of enStratus are the Console (Web interface for cloud management), the Provisioning System (stores critical data, deals with auto-scaling, auto-recovery, and cloud system monitoring), and the Credentials System (stores all authentication and encryption credentials and is not routable from the Internet).
Pros
Regarding the enterprise focus of the company, the strongest features of enStratus are cloud security and availability management. The patent-pending security architecture of the platform ensures the separation of security keys from encrypted data and keeping user credentials outside the cloud. Automated management tools, an auto-recovery engine, and clustering capabilities help minimize human error. enStratus also provides cloud-independent backups, as well as cross-cloud disaster recovery.
Cons
enStratus cannot ensure that someone having access to your AWS key will not produce API calls directly to the AWS API endpoint bypassing the enStratus infrastructure, therefore users should keep to the “no-sharing-keys” policy. Another thing is that enStratus handles the snapshot feature to clone/backup storage volumes to Amazon S3, but there is no hosted backup service available.
Recommended use
enStratus is a good solution for dealing with an enterprise-level cloud infrastructure operating across multiple clouds. It is also recommended for improving cloud security levels, since your encryption data and authentication credentials are kept outside of the cloud you are managing.
